Seymour enlisted with the Artillery. He proceeded to Victoria for further Artillery training.
Embarked Melbourne per HMAT ‘Medic’ A7 for England 20.5.1916.

Roll Unit 23rd Howitzer Brigade Ammunition Column.
Seymour disembarked at Plymouth 18.7.1916. He transferred from the 23rd HB to the 3rd Division Ammunition Column 7.8.1916. Seymour proceeded overseas to France 22.11.1916 and joined his Bn. 21.1.1917. Troops experienced a harsh winter in the trenches of the Somme in the winter of 1916-1917. In April they were moved to Messines –Wytschaete Ridge in Belgium and fought at Messines in June 1917 (AWM 3rd Division). They fought at Broodseinde Ridge in October 1917. Seymour took 2 weeks leave in England in March 1918 and rejoined his unit in France in 4.4.1918. Seymour was punished for failing to obey a lawful command 23.1.1919. He took almost 2 weeks leave in England 4.3.1919- 18.3.1919 and rejoined his unit in France. He marched out of France for return to Australia 10.4.1919. He marched in to No. 3 Group at Codford 23.4.1919.
