Embarked Fremantle per ‘Runic’ A54 for Egypt 29.1.1916.

Roll Unit 18th Reinforcement, 16th Battalion.
Bingham disembarked in Alexandria, Egypt with the 18th Reinforcement, 16th Battalion 25.2.1916. He marched in to Zietoun 26.2.1916. In April he transferred to the 48th Battalion at Serapeum 2.4.1916. After 4 months of intensive training, he joined the British Expeditionary Force at Alexandria per HMT ‘Caledonia’ for France 2.6.1916. He disembarked with his unit at Marseilles 9.6.1916. The 48th Battalion’s first major battle in France was at Pozieres in August 1916. Bingham was reported missing in action at Pozieres, France 8.8.1916 (Reported West Australian Newspaper 18.6.1917). The Court of Inquiry Proceedings 4.5.1917, determined that Bingham was KIA in action at Pozieres 8.8.1916. The Red Cross Files note he was hit by a shell and killed. He was buried in Field where he fell and a cross was erected on the grave (Australian War Memorial, Red Cross File). In 1927 the War Graves Commission was responsible for locating graves and centralizing the burial area. Bingham’s remains were exhumed and reinterred in 1927 at Serre Road Cemetery (No 2, Plot 13, Row J, Grave 13) Beaumont Hamel, Picardie, France.
