Military History


Armstrong enlisted with the Artillery as a Gunner. He was transferred to Maribyrnong, Victoria for further artillery training.
Embarked Melbourne per HMAT 'Port Sydney' A15 for Egypt 9.11.1917.
Roll Rank Gunner.
Roll Unit 30th Reinforcement, Field Artillery.
Armstrong disembarked in Suez 12.12.1917. His unit embarked at Alexandria for Taranto, Italy per HT ‘Heytesbury’ 18.12.1917. From this port they embarked for England. Armstrong and his unit disembarked Southampton 4.1.1918. They marched into the Artillery Base Depot in England. Armstrong was hospitalized with Influenza 2.3.1918. He proceeded overseas to France 1.4.1918 and marched in to Rouelles 2.4.1918. Armstrong was taken on Strength with his Battalion. He was transferred to 1st Division Ammunition Column and taken on Strength 11.4.1918. Armstrong was wounded accidentally in the field with a fractured Ulna 2.1.1919. He was transferred by the 1st Australian Field Ambulance to the 55th Casualty Clearing Station and from there was invalided to England. He was transferred by the Hospital Ship ‘St Dennis’ 14.1.1919. He was admitted to the City of London Hospital 27.1.1919. He was discharged to the Depot at Sutton Veny before returning to Australia.

Discharged 12.5.1919.
Final Rank Gunner, 1st Division Artillery Column.
Medical Condition NK.
Awards and Medals British War Medal, Victory Medal.
Notes Armstrong took a degree in Agricultural Science on his return and became an agricultural advisor in the Great Southern District with the Department of Agriculture. Newspapers of the time noted he was a Senior Agricultural Advisor in 1930 (Western Mail 6.3.1930 p44)
