Military History


Embarked at Fremantle per ‘Mashobra’ for Suez 8.2.1915.
Roll Rank Trooper/Batman.
Roll Unit 10th Light Horse Regiment, 3rd Light Horse Brigade.
Bax disembarked with the 10th Light Horse in Egypt. He embarked with Mediterranean Expeditionary Force for Gallipoli 16.5.1915. This Regiment is famous for its charge of the Nek 7.7.1915. Bax was sick with tonsillitis at Gallipoli 10.7.1915 and  was transferred by Hospital Ship to hospital at Mudros. Bax was transferred to Convalescent House 22.7.1915. He rejoined his Regiment 25.7.1915. He was then admitted to 1st Australian General Hospital with Synovitis 11.8.1915 and transferred to the 3rd Auxiliary Convalescent Hospital at Heliopolis 13.8.1915. He was then transferred to Helouan Hospital with dropsy (oedema) 18.8.1915. Bax was recommended for early return to Australia.
Embarked Suez per HT ‘Euripides’ 27.8.1915.
Returned/Disembarked Fremantle 24.9.1915.
Discharged 14.12.1915.
Final Rank Private, 10th Light Horse Regiment.
Medical Condition Invalided with enteric ascites.
Awards and Medals 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal.
Notes Bax was married in 1912. His wife he enlisted in 1915 and was invalided home that year. His wife Elizabeth Clara died 1917 (Sunday Times 19.7.1917). Bax remarried Irene and had a son Kevin who predeceased him in 1951. James Edwin Bax died August 1952, he was buried in the Catholic Cemetery at Karrakatta, WA.
