Embarked Melbourne per HMAT ‘Ascanius’ for Egypt 10.11.1915.
Roll Rank Driver.
Roll Unit 11th Reinf. 4th Divisional Supply Train. Army Supply Corps.
Howley disembarked in Egypt. He was taken on strength of No.4 Coy. Australian Army Service Corps (AASC) 15.1.1916. He entrained from Zeitoun to Alexandria. Howley joined the BEF at Alexandria and embarked for France per HT ‘Abdul Muhsin’ 25.3.1916. He disembarked at Marseilles 1.4.1916. The 1st Division was moved to a quiet sector of Armentieres to acclimatize to Western front conditions (Wikipedia.) Howley injured his right knee and was taken to the 3rd Field Ambulance 6.7.1916. He was treated for synovitis of right knee and discharged 7.7.1916. In the deteriorating winter conditions on the Somme, Howley became ill with influenza 18.9.1916–7.10.1916. He was promoted to Temp/ Farrier Cpl. 17.2.1917 and 2 months later to Farrier Cpl. 18.4.1917. Howley became ill and was diagnosed with Glycosuria (sugar in the urine) 8.7.1918. He was transferred to 14th General Hospital at Wimereux 9.7.1918. On recovery, he marched out to rejoin his Unit 10.8.1918. He was promoted to T/Farrier Sgt. 30.11.1918. Whilst on leave in Paris he developed tonsillitis and was hospitalized in France. Howley was then transferred to the UK, to Hereford Hospital.4.1.1919. He rejoined his Unit 26.1.1919 and 3 days later was appointed Acting Farrier Staff Sergeant 29.1.1919. He marched in to Weymouth for return to Australia 4.2.1919 and reverted to rank of Farrier Cpl.
Embarked Devonport for Australia per HT ‘Suffolk’ 12.4.1919.
Returned/Disembarked Melbourne 5.6.1919.
Discharged 20.8.1919.
