Hubbard enlisted at Blackboy Hill. He was promoted to Corporal 6.6.1916 and Sgt. 1.12.1916.
Embarked Fremantle per ‘Persic’ A34 for England 29.12.1916.
Roll Rank Sergeant.
Roll Unit 39th Infantry Battalion, 6th Reinforcements AIF.
Hubbard disembarked at Devonport 3.3.1916 and marched in to the Australian Details Camp Sutton Mandeville 4.3.1917 and then marched out to the 10th Training Bn at Durrington and Larkhill 21.3.1916. Hubbard reverted to the rank of Private on joining the 10th Training Battalion.
He was promoted to Acting Lance Corporal 10.4.1917 and to Acting Sergeant. 1.7.1917. He attended a course in Musketry at the School of Instruction at Tidworth 3.7.1917. Hubbard proceeded overseas to France 30.8.1917. He transferred from the 6th Reinf. to the 39th Battalion 14.9.1917. He was wounded in action at Broodseinde, where the 39th Battalion formed the third wave of the 10th Brigade’s attack 4.10.1917. (Wikipedia 39th Battalion). Hubbard returned to his Unit on recovery and was invalided with Trench Fever 19.4.1918. He recovered from trench flu (24.5.1918 West Australian Newspaper) and rejoined unit 12.9.1918. Hubbard was transferred to 39th Battalion AIF.  He embarked from France for Southampton 21.2.1919 and  was listed for return to Australia.

Discharged 3.7.1919.

Medical Condition NK (Rheumatism).

Notes When Hubbard enlisted in 1916, he had at least one son, Donald age 13 years  (Daily News 7.8.1915 p3)
