Driver disembarked at Plymouth with the 4th Machine Gun Coy. 25.9.1916. He marched in to the No. 3 Camp at Parkhouse 20.10.1916. Driver proceeded overseas to France 17.3.1917 with 2nd Division Machine Gun Coy. He was transferred to 21st Bn. AIF in France 11.6.1917. His Bn. fought at Mouquet Farm in July 1917. (AWM 21st Bn. ) Drew was admitted to hospital sick 11.8.1917. He was admitted to hospital with bronchitis and asthma 11.9.1917. Drew rejoined his unit 27.9.1917. His Bn. was involved in a 3 kilometre march that resulted in the capture of Broodseinde Ridge in October 1917. Driver was wounded in this action, receiving a GSW to his right thigh 4.10.1917. He was invalided to England per HS ‘Warilda’ 18.10.1917 and admitted to the Beaufort War Hospital 19.10.1917. His asthma and bronchitis continued to be an issue in the damp and cold of the trenches on the Somme.
Drew was invalided to England for return to Australia.
