Embarked Fremantle per HMAT A35 ‘Berrima’ for UK 23.12.1916.
Roll Rank Private.
Roll Unit 23rd Reinforcement 16th Infantry, Australian Imperial Force.
Carter fell sick and was hospitalised on the ship 21.1.1916. He disembarked at Devonport with the 23rd Reinforcement 16th Battalion 23.12.1916 and marched in to Codford with 4th Training Battalion 24.2.1917. Whilst training at Codford he was hospitalised with bronchitis and cardiac problems 11.3.1917. He proceeded overseas to France 22.5.1917 and fought in trench warfare on the Somme. His Battalion was involved in the advance on the Hindenberg line in September 1917. Carter was wounded in action in the field with gunshot wound to his right hand 27.9.1917. He was invalided to England by Hospital Ship and admitted to Stratford on Avon War Hospital 18.10.1917. Carter was listed for early return to Australia as an invalid.

Discharged 27.2.1919.
