Embarked Fremantle per HMAT ‘Somali’ 27.3.1916 for Egypt.
Roll Rank Private.
Roll Unit 10th Reinf, 28th Battalion, AIF.
Tanner disembarked at Suez with the 10th Reinf. 28th Bn. He entrained to Alexandria, joined the BEF. and embarked per HMAT ‘Minnetonka’ for England 2.6.1916. He disembarked at Plymouth 12.6.1916 and marched in to 7th Training Bn. The 7th Training proceeded overseas to France 25.7.1916. Tanner was taken on Strength with 28th Bn. 8.8.1916. He fought with his Bn. at Pozieres and on the Somme in trench warfare. Tanner was appointed L/Cpl 21.3.1917. He was admitted sick to No. 56 Casualty Clearing Station with Trench Fever 20.5.1917. He was promoted to T/Cpl. 29.3.1918 and to Cpl. 29.3.1918. He embarked in France for Folkestone and reported to AHQ in London 3 .8.1918. Tanner was transferred to the overseas Training Bde. and marched out to England. He trained at the School of Musketry at Tidworth 5.9.1918 and attended a Lewis Gun Course 6.9.1918, where he qualified with 1st Class and distinguished rankings. Tanner was appointed A/Sgt 13.10.1918. After going AWOL, Tanner was reduced in rank to Cpl. 11.1.1919. He proceeded overseas to France 18.2.1919. He returned to England and marched in to Sutton Veny for return to Australia 26.3.1919.

Discharged 22.8.1919.
