Embarked Melbourne per HMAT ‘Karroo’ A10 for Egypt 1.2.1915.

Teesdale-Smith disembarked at Suez. After a brief and intensive training period, he entrained to Alexandria, joined MEF and embarked for Gallipoli 16.5.1915. The 9LH arrived at Gallipoli in late May 1915. They were reserves for the Battle of the Nek but suffered loss to 50% of their men in the attack on Hill 60 in August 2015. Teesdale-Smith fortunately became ill and was admitted to the HS ‘Galeka’ with influenza 2.8.1915. He was transferred to Mudros 4.8.1915 and later appointed L/Cpl. at Gallipoli 21.9.1915. Teesdale-Smith was admitted to hospital with Diphtheria 13.12.1915. He was transferred by HS ‘Carisbrook Castle’ to the 19th General Hospital at Alexandria 12.1.1916. Teesdale- Smith was transferred to the No.1 General Hospital at Heliopolis and discharged to Helouan Convalescent Camp 7.2.1916. Teesdale –Smith marched out to Serapeum 27.2.1916. As part of the mounted division he fought to defend the Suez Canal in March 1017. He was awarded a Distinguished Conduct Medal 22.4.1916 for an act of gallantry. Teesdale-Smith was appointed Sgt. 2.2.1917. He was promoted to 2nd. Lt. 2.4.1917. He was sent to the Imperial School of Instruction at Zietoun 1.6.1917 then to the School of Instruction 11.8.1917. He was promoted to Lieut. 6.10.1917. Teesdale-Smith was wounded in action 12.11.1917. He was admitted to 4th General Hospital Abbassia- GSW right calf 16.11.1917. Teesdale-Smith was sent to the 3rd Light Horse Training Regiment 5.12.1917. Transferred to 9th Light Horse Regiment 9.1.1918. To Kelal Mounted Bayonet Course 4.3.1918. He was hospitalised with a debility 20.7.1918. He marched into the 3rd Training Regiment for return to Australia 20.1.1919.
