Military History

MacLeod enlisted with the artillery, he was transferred to Maribyrnong for further training.
Embarked Melbourne per HMAT ‘Ascanius’ A11 for Egypt 11.5.1917.
Roll Rank Gunner.
Roll Unit 3rd Field Artillery Brigade, 22nd Infantry Battalion, 19th Reinforcements.
MacLeod landed in Egypt, AlexandriaHe was transferred to the 3rd Brigade Artillery Column (BAC) 18.4.1915. His records note in error that he was promoted to Bdr. 23.5.1915 (this was later corrected). MacLeod was transferred from 8th Battery to the 3rd Brigade Artillery Column (BAC) 25.5.1915. Then back to the 8th Battery. He embarked with the MEF for Gallipoli and joined his Unit 26.5.1915 . MacLeod was taken to the 3rd casualty Clearing Station with problems with an old wound on his left thigh- noted in his attestation papers.  He was transferred  by ship to Mudros where he was admitted to hospital sick 20.9.1915. McLeod was absent without leave 27.9.1915. He was rcorded as absent without leave 29.9 1915. He was transferred to hospital at Mudros 30.9.1915. He was invalided to England per ‘Aquitania’ 21.10.1915 and admitted to the 3rd London General Hospital, with a wound to his right thigh 27.10.1915.  This  wound in his thigh appeared to be an old wound, but affected his mobility. McLeod was absent without leave from 29.12.1915 to 31.12.1915. He forfeited 3 days pay and was awarded 72 hours detention 5.1.1916. He was listed for early return to Australia as an invalid. MacLeod embarked per ‘Suevic’ 11.3.1916 and disembarked at Fremantle 22.4.1916. He was discharged 6.6.1916 as medically unfit. Macleod returned to Manilya Station and worked there for a preiod before re-enlisting.

MacLeod re-attested/enlisted (new SN 6940) as a Private with the 22nd Infantry Battalion 28.2.1917. It is interesting to note that his name was spelt 'McLeod' on attestation papers.  (for the purpose of consistency his name will be referred to and spelt as per the family spelling with an 'a'.) MacLeod embarked at Melbourne per HMAT ‘Ascanius’ A11 for England 11.5.1917. He disembarked at Devonport England 20.7.1917 and marched in to 6th Training Bn. at Rollestone. He went AWOL for 3 days and was awarded 13 days loss of pay 29.9.1917. McLeod marched out from 6th Training Bn. Fovant 28.11.1917 to No 2 Command Depot at Weymouth 29.11.1917.  It became apparent whilst training that  the weakness  in his right leg (from an old injury) and a hernia to the right Abductor Muscles were caused by a grenade wound and  resulted in health and mobility problems.  Macleod was not engaged in active service with his second enlistment, however, was listed for early return to Australia for a ‘change’ as an invalid 10.1.1918
Embarked for Australia per HT ‘Corinthia’ 10.1.1918.
Returned/Disembarked Fremantle
Discharged 9.4.1918.
Final Rank Private 22nd Bn.
