Military History


Embarked per ‘Itonus’ A 50 for Egypt 30.12.1915.
Roll Rank 2nd Lieutenant.
Roll Unit 12th Reinforcements, 9th Battalion.
Lukin disembarked in Egypt with his Battalion. He arrived soon after the final evacuation from Gallipoli. In the re organisation of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) that followed with increased new recruits and preparation for embarkation to the Western Front in Europe, Lukin was transferred to 4th Pioneer Battalion 12.3.1916. He joined the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) at Alexandria and embarked for France 29.3.1916. He disembarked at Marseilles 4.4.1916. Lukin marched in to Etaples and reported to 1st Australian Divisional Brigade Depot 7.4.1916. He was transferred to his original 9th Bn. 17.5.1916. The Battalion's first major action was at Pozieres in the Somme Valley in July 1916. Lukin was wounded in action 25.7.1916 with a gunshot wound to his right foot. He was transferred per Hospital Ship (HS) ‘Abbeville’ to England and admitted to the 2nd London General Hospital at Chelsea. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 3.8.1916 and discharged from hospital 16.10.1916. Lukin was listed for early return to Australia as an invalid for  a'change'.
Embarked Southampton for Australia per HS ’Kaboola’ 19.10.1916, then re-embarked for Fremantle per HT ’Barambah’.
Returned/Disembarked Fremantle 2.12.1916, then proceeded per HT ‘Barambah’ to 1st MD and entrained overland to 3rd Military District (MD) Brisbane 9.6.1917.
Discharged 15.4.1917.
Final Rank Lieutenant, 9th Battalion Australian Imperial Force (AIF).
Medical Condition Invalided- gunshot wound to his right foot/heel.
