Embarked Melbourne per HMAT ‘Orsova’ A67 for Egypt 12.11.1915.

Lane was appointed Temp. Shoeing Sergeant at Sea 12.11.1915. He disembarked in Egypt and underwent a brief period of intensive training. He was taken on strength with the 4th Division 24th Howitzer Brigade 112th Battery. Lane was promoted to Farrier Sergeant at Serapeum 19.5.1916 and then to the 2nd Army Field Artillery Brigade. (FAB) 25.1.1916. He was posted to 11th Battery 24th Howitzer Brigade 1.4.1916. He entrained to Alexandria and joined the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) 3.6.1916. Lane proceeded overseas to France as Farrier Sergeant. He transferred to 12th Field Artillery Brigade 25.1.1917 and the 112th Battery 24.2.1917. During his time on the Somme (1917) he was hospitalised on several occasions with a debility. He marched out from France 14.3.1919 for Weymouth, England, for demobilisation and return to Australia.
Embarked London for Australia per ‘Devonha’ 8.5.1919.
Returned/Disembarked Melbourne 5.6.1919.
Discharged 14.8.1919.
