Barrett-Lennard disembarked with the 8th Battery, Field Artillery Brigade at Alexandria 20.1.1915. They joined Mediterranean Expeditionary Force and embarked at Alexandria for Gallipoli. The Battery landed with guns on the second day of the invasion, however, the unsuitable ground resulted in the guns being returned to the ships. In May, the guns were again landed and hauled into position. They were withdrawn in December with the evacuation.
Barrett-Lennard was KIA 17.7.1915. He was buried by Dean Talbot, by the 8th Battery Artillery Stables, at ANZAC on the South Side of the building 1, Grave 3, 17.7.1915 (Victoria Gully). The gravesite was located ½ mile south of Anzac Cove. The site was also known as the ’8th Battery Cemetery’. His remains were reinterred to Shell Green Cemetery, Plot 2, Row K, Grave 27.
Final Rank Driver, 8th Battery, 3rd Field Artillery Brigade.

Notes On 17th July the No 1 gun was hit, killing Driver D. Barrett-Lennard, of Guildford, Western Australia and Gunner S. Carter, of Fremantle, Western Australia. The resultant letter by McClarty about this incident, and later poem '8th Battery' or 'How The Men of The Battery Died', received international publicity and contributed to the legend of the bravery and mateship of the Anzacs.
His Mother moved to ‘Comares’, North Road, Bassendean, WA 1917 after his father’s death. A tablet was unveiled at Upper Swan Church to his memory (West Australian Newspaper 18.7.1916). A memorial tablet of marble was placed in the All Saints Church at Upper Swan in his memory.
