Embarked Sydney NSW per HMAT ‘Beltana’ to Egypt 19.11.1915.

Hardwick disembarked at Alexandria with the 3rd Field Coy Engineers. He was taken on strength at Tel-el- Kebir 28.12.1915. Five months later he joined the BEF at Alexandria and embarked for France per ‘Kingstonia’ 27.3.1916. Hardwick disembarked at Marseilles 3.4.1916. Hardwick fought on the Somme in France and Belgium. On the night of the 22nd July, the Australian Divisions launched one of several attacks in the vicinity of Pozieres. Hardwick was wounded in the field, suffering ‘shell shock’. He was admitted to the Casualty Clearing Station then the ANZAC Rest Station. He was discharged, as fit to return to active service 26.8.1916. Hardwick marched in to duty in France. He became sick in the field with Influenza 20.11.1916 and was taken to the Convalescent Camp at Rouelles 20.12.1916. Hardwick rejoined his Unit 11.12.1916. The 3rd Field Company Engineers as part of the 1st Division, fought at Bullecourt, at the Third Battle of Ypres including Polygon Wood, Passchaendale and at Hazebrouk in 1917.  Hardwick was appointed Driver 23.10.1917. He marched out from France to England 19.1.1919 and disembarked in England for return to Australia 25.1.1919.

Awards and Medals 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal.
Notes Hardwick Married Nelly Breakell on his return from the front in 1920. He farmed at 'Mandiga' Mt. Marshall died. Hardwick died  in 1932 leaving his wife and 3 children (Sunday Times 16.10.1932 p2)
