Embarked Fremantle per HMAT A8 ‘Argyllshire’ for Suez 19.4.1915.

Roll Unit 16th Infantry Battalion.
Barlow disembarked in Egypt. His Battalion entrained to Alexandria and joined the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. They embarked at Alexandria for Gallipoli 2.6.1915. Barlow was hospitalised with Influenza 13.7.1915. He was later hospitalized with asthma 28.7.1915. Barlow was listed as a casualty with condition unknown (The Sun- Kalgoorlie 19.9.1915 p6) He was transferred to England by Hospital Ship 26.8.1915. On discharge from hospital he marched in to Monto Video, Weymouth 21.10.1915. Barlow rejoined his unit in Egypt 25.6.1916. The 16th Battalion was combined with new reinforcements and became the 48th Battalion. Barlow proceeded with the 48th Battalion to Alexandria, where they joined the British Expeditionary Force. He embarked for Marseilles, France 2.6.1916. Barlow proceeded to the Battalion Depot where he was appointed Driver. The 48th Battalion fought at Pozieres in August 1917 and suffered 598 casualties. Barlow was wounded in action and admitted to hospital with abrasions and minor wounds 26.8.1916. He continued to fight in the trenches and was admitted to hospital with pneumonia 14.3.1917. He was invalided to England by Hospital Ship. Whilst in England he was AWOL (away without leave) on 5 occasions resulting in him being Court Martialled. He was held in confinement and then discharged as permanently unfit for service 9.1.1918. He remained in England.
