Dornan disembarked at Devonport 27.3.1917. He marched in to the 3rd Training Bn. from 24th Reinf 11th Bn. 28.3.1917. Dornan was hospitalised with septic tonsils 23.5.1917. On recovery, he was transferred to the 44th Bn. Details at Sutton Veny 27.11.1917. He proceeded overseas to France from Southampton 18.12.1917. He fought on the Western Front in the trenches. Dornan was admitted to Lewisham Hospital with a septic left forearm 6.4.1919. He was detached for Duty to the AIF HQ from the 44th Bn. 3.6.1919. Dornan married Georgina Lamb in Ireland 24.9.1919 and was granted indefinite family leave, subject to recall 27.9.1919. He rejoined the 44th Bn. 4.10.1919. Dornan and his wife returned to Australia.
