Military History


Crowther enlisted as Trooper with 10th Light Horse. He was promoted to Sergeant. 21.10.1914. He was married after enlistment, to Edna Calder Crowther, 8 Hamersley Rd., Subiaco, WA.
Embarked Fremantle per A52 ‘Surada’ 17.2.1915 for Egypt also recorded as travelling on the Mashobra’ A47 8.2.1915.
Roll Rank Sergeant.
Roll Unit 10th Light Horse.
Crowther disembarked in Egypt with the 10th Light Horse. After a period of intensive training he joined the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force at Alexandria and embarked for Gallipoli 8.5.1915. At Gallipoli he became ill and was diagnosed with influenza 28.6.1915. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant 14.9.1915. Crowther was hospitalised with influenza, measles, jaundice 11.1.1916.
He was transferred Malta 1916 as an invalid (West Australian Newspaper 13.1.1916) and admitted to the 1st Australian General Hospital at Heliopolis (West Australian Newspaper 4.2.1916). Crowther was struck off strength from 10th Light Horse 28.1.1916 and invalided back to Australia per ‘Kanowna’ with jaundice and cardiac irritability, for a 3 months ‘change’.
He re embarked at Fremantle with the 27th Reinforcement of 10th Light Horse per ‘Port Sydney’ 9.5.1917 for Egypt.
Crowther disembarked at Suez and joined the to 11th Reinforcement Camel Corp. He was promoted to Lieutenant 22.7.1917. He was admitted to the isolation camp at Moascar 27.7.1917. Crowther transferred to the 3rd Machine Gun Squadron 9.8.1917. He was admitted to hospital with sciatica 21.12.1917 in Palestine. Crowther was listed for return to Australia for 6 months ‘change,’ however, did not return to the Western Front.
Embarked from Suez per HT ‘Ulysses’ for Australia 15.2.1918.
Returned/Disembarked Fremantle 11.3.1918.
Discharged/ Appt. Terminated 23.7.1918.
Final Rank Lieutenant. 3rd Australian Machine Gun Squadron.
Medical Condition Invalided with sciatica.
Awards and Medals 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal.
