Military History

Embarked Fremantle per HMAT ‘Suffolk’ A23 for UK 10.10.1916.

Cox disembarked at Plymouth with the 11th Battalion 2.12.1916 He marched in to the 3rd Training Battalion 7.12.1916. After a short period of intensive training, he proceeded overseas to France per SS ‘Victoria’ 4.2.1917 and marched in to the 1st Australian Division Depot at Etaples 4.2.1917. Cox was taken on Strength with the 11th Battalion ‘D’ Company in France 11.2.1917. He became ill and was moved from the Field by the 7th Field Ambulance to the 2nd Casualty Clearing station and diagnosed with Mumps 21.3.1917. Cox returned to his unit. The 11th Battalion moved to Noreuil in early May, where they occupied a section of the captured German Front line. Their position was attacked during the second Battle of Bullecourt. Cox was wounded in this action, receiving a Shrapnel Wound to his back 7.5.1917. Reported in papers (West Australian Newspaper 9.6.1917). He was transferred to Hospital Ship ‘St David’ to England and admitted to the Princess Christian Hospital. On recovery, he marched in to the 2nd Commonwealth Depot at Weymouth 21.6 1917 and was transferred the next week to the No 3. Com. Depot at Hurdcott 28.6.1917. He was AWOL for a period in August and forfeited 5 days pay. Cox marched in to the overseas Training Brigade at Perham Downs 8.9.1917. He was still training in England when he became sick with pleurisy and was admitted to the Military Hospital at Sutton Veny 13.2.1918. Cox proceeded to France to rejoin his unit 12.6.1918, however, became unwell within 10 days and was admitted to the 11th Casualty Clearing Station with influenza 22.6.1918. He rejoined his unit on 3.7.1918. Cox was wounded in action (second time) 10.8.1918 during the Battle of Amiens 1918, receiving a Shrapnel Wound to his right shoulder. He was invalided to England by Hospital Ship 22.8.1918 and admitted to Brighton Military Hospital 24.8.1918. He was transferred to the 1st Auxiliary Hospital at Harefield 30.8.1918. Cox was discharged to ‘Littlemoor’ Camp at Weymouth 13.9.1918. He joined the overseas Training Brigade at Sutton Veny, was demobilized and listed on the Nominal Roll for return to Australia.
