He enlisted into the Artillery as a Gunner and was transferred to Maribyrnong, Victoria for further training 15.7.1917.
Embarked Melbourne per HMAT ‘Port Sydney’ for Egypt 9.11.1917.
Roll Rank Gunner.
Roll Unit 30th Reinforcement, Field Artillery Brigade.
Clark disembarked at Suez 12.12.1917. His unit was entrained for Alexandria and embarked 18.12.1917 for Taranto. They disembarked at this port 22.12.1918 before continuing their voyage to England. He disembarked at Southampton 4.1.1918 and marched in to  Knook Camp, Heytesbury for training. Clark was hospitalised at Sutton Veny with Measles 26.1.1918. He proceeded overseas to France and marched in to the Australian General Base Depot 22.4.1918. Clark was transferred to the 10th Field Artillery Brigade 3.5.1918 and wounded in action, gassed, possibly in the vicinity of Villers-Bretonneux on the Somme 8.6.1918 (Reported West Australian Newspaper 4.7.1918). He was discharged to the Australian General Base Depot 15.6.1918 and promoted to Bombardier 17.11.1918, then Temporary Corporal in 1919. Carter was demobilized and listed for return to Australia.

Returned/Disembarked Fremantle 16.8.1919.
Discharged 9.9.1919.
