Murray enlisted with the 16th Infantry Bn. The Bn. was transported to Victoria for training at Broadmeadows .
Embarked Melbourne per HMAT ‘Ceramic’ A40 for Egypt 22.12.1914.

Murray embarked in Melbourne, however, his ship stopped at Albany before proceeding to Egypt. He disembarked at Alexandria with his Bn. 3.2.1915. He entrained to the training camp at Heliopolis. The 16th Bn. received orders prepare to move 4.4.1915. They entrained to Alexandria, joined the MEF and embarked for Gallipoli. per HT ‘Hyda Pasha’. Murray disembarked with his Bn. at ANZAC Cove on the afternoon of 25.4.1915. They moved to an area known as Pope’s Hill which they held for 5 days until relieved. (16th Bn Anzac site) Murray was reported KIA at Gallipoli Peninsula 30.4.1915. Red Cross Files variously report that Murray was killed soon after landing or on the 26.5.1915 in the vicinity of Pope’s Hill. The exact date of death is unreliable. Murray’s body was not recovered and identified and no known burial site is recorded. (AWM Red Cross File See Gibbons SN 623).
Murray is commemorated at the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula, Cannakkale Province, Turkey.
