Embarked Fremantle per HMAT ‘Miltiades’ for Egypt 12.2.1916.

Roll Unit 28th Battalion, 9th Reinf, AIF.
Short disembarked in Egypt. He marched in to 7th Training Bn. at Serapeum. Short reverted to rank of Private. 2.4.1916 when he joined the 51st Bn. He was appointed as L/Cpl. 14.4.1916. Short entrained to Alexandria, joined BEF and embarked per TS ‘Ivernia’ 5.6.1916 for France. He disembarked at Marseilles, France.12.6.1916. The 51st Bn. saw their first major battle at Pozieres and Mouquet Farm in August and September 1916. During this period Short was promoted to Cpl. in 51st Bn. 28.8.1916. Whilst in engaged in Battle at Mouquet Farm on 3.9.1918, he was reported missing. At first it was thought he may have been taken a POW. However, with no communication from him or others, the Court of Enquiry determined in 23.4.1917 that Short had been KIA 3.9.1916. Short’s body was not located until 1925 when the War Graves Commission re interred his remains and buried him at Bouzincourt Ridge Cemetery Plot 3, Row C ,Grave 12.- 2 ½ miles east of Albert, France. A Memorial Cross was erected on his grave. The Cemetery is known today as The Bouzincourt Ridge Cemetery, Albert, Picardie, France.

Notes Wife remarried and lived in Pingelly, then moved to South Australia. Short’s Mother advised that his two children were in care in an orphanage.
