Embarked Fremantle HMAT A20 ‘Hororata’ 20.4.1915.
Roll Rank Private.
Roll Unit 5th Reinf, 11th Infantry Battalion.
Shields disembarked with the 1/11 Bn at Suez. He entrained to Alexandria 15.9.1915 and joined the MEF for Gallipoli. Shields was taken on strength with the 11th Bn. 22.6.1915. Shields was buried in a shell explosion. He was admitted to the 2nd Light Horse Field Ambulance with Enteritis and transferred to the HS ‘Mahono’ for Floriana, Malta 18.9.1915. Shields embarked for England as an invalid per HS ‘D‘Italia’ 9.10.1915. He was admitted to Dudley Rd. Hospital Birmingham 18.10.1915 and convalesced at Epsom. He was discharged 20.12.1915 as fit for service. On recovery, Shields embarked for France and marched into the Australian General Base. Depot (AGBD) and was transferred to the 1st ANZAC trenching Bn 25.5.1916. He was taken on strength with the 11th Bn. at Rouen 29.1.1917. This Bn. fought at Pozieres France. Shields wounded with shell shock during this battle and was transferred for light duties to 1st Australian General Hospital Rouen 2.4.1917. He was admitted to Hospital with a debility 6.6.1917. Shields was transferred to AIF HQ in London 28.9.1917 for light duties with a heart problem. He was listed for early return to Australia as an invalid.
