Enlisted as Private 15.11.1915. Promoted to Sgt. then 2nd Lieut. 19.2.1916.
Embarked Fremantle per HMAT ‘Miltiades’ A28 for England 7.8.1916.
Roll Rank 2nd Lieut.
Roll Unit 19th Reinf, 16th Battalion, AIF.
Mills disembarked at Plymouth 25.9.1916. He marched in to the 4th Training Bn. 4th Australian Div. Base Depot. After a period of intensive training, he proceeded overseas to France 15.10.1916. Mills joined the 26th Bn. 26.10.1916. He was taken on Strength in the Field 29.10.1916. The 16th Bn. fought at Gueudecourt and Flers in the Somme valley. Mills was granted 6 months leave to Australia without pay from following death of his father, as he was nominated Executor of his will 29.12.1916. He did not return to service, citing domestic and business reasons.
Embarked for Australia per ‘Mongolia’ 25.1.1917.
Returned/Disembarked Fremantle 6.3.1917.
Appointment Terminated 15.6.1917.
Final Rank 2nd Lieut., 16th Bn AIF.
Medical Condition NK.
Awards and Medals British War Medal, Victory Medal.
Notes. Mills’ father was a noted business man being the owner of W. Mills of Mills and Ware Coy. (WAN 1.11.1916) Mills took over the company after his father's death with his brother Norman.
