Humphry embarked for England, seeking a Commission in the Imperial Army.(Daily News 20.6.1916. He enlisted with the Artists Rifles SN 7843 - 5th Territorial Bn. Prince of Wales North Staffordshire Regimentand obtained a Commission in Lincoln with them in 1917.(Western Mail 9.3.1917) He served for 4 years in France and after Armistice, joined the Army of Occupation.(Daily News 1.4.1920)

He married Mary Cruickshank at Christchurch Claremont 18.3.1924 (Daily News 17.3.1924). Cruickshank farmed at ‘Pankee’, Walebing near Moora.(Daily News 26.9.1924)
