Embarked Fremantle per ‘Miltiades’ to Suez.

Roll Unit 11th Battalion AIF.
Grose was promoted to Corporal 16.12.1916, then to Sgt. 14.1.1916. He joined the BEF at Alexandria and embarked for France. He disembarked at Marseilles 29.3.1916. Groser was taken on strength with the 11th Bn. in France 25.5.1916 and reverted to rank. Prior to embarking for France th 11th Bn was splitand the 51st battalion formed.   Groser joined the 51st Bn.  He landed at Marseilles 5.4.1916 and  he was billeted at Fletre, then moved to Sailly to undergo a brief training /acclimatisation period. The 51st Bn. moved to the frontline trenches on the Somme near Fleurbaix, within a fortnight of disembarking in France (AWM 51st Bn. ) Groser was wounded in action 7.6.1916 with a GSW to his left Buttock. He was invalided to England 29.6.1916. On recovery and after a period of training with the Overseas Training unit he was deemed fit for active service, he returned to France 7.10.1916. He rejoined the 51st Bn. 18.10.1916. His Bn. joined the advance to the Hindenburg Line as the German Army retreated. At the Battle of Noreuil, in an attack against this fortified village, Groser was KIA 2.4.1917. He was buried in the field and his remains were not identified. Those buried in mass graves were interred at the Queant Rd Cemetery. Today he is commemorated at the Memorial in Quean Road British Cemetery, 9 1/4 miles NE of Bapaume, France.

Notes Groser was the youngest son of Canon Groser, rector of the Ascension Church Midland.  A memorial service was conducted at the Church of Ascension in Midland (Camp Chronicle 31.5.1917). His brother-in-law, Lieut V.B. Daniel was killed in action 6.5.1917.
