Embarked from Fremantle per HMAT ‘Suffolk’ A23 for Egypt 9.12.1915.

Duncan disembarked in Egypt. He proceeded to Alexandria, joined the BEF 1.9.1916 and embarked per ‘Llandouan Castle’ for France 19.3.1916. He disembarked at Marseilles 26.3.1916. Duncan served in France and Belgium with the 1st Sanitary Section. In September 1916, he was promoted to Acting Corporal 23.9.1916. He was detached for duty with the 5th Infantry Bde. 23.9.1916 and later with the 7th Brigade 29.10.1916. Duncan was promoted to Lance Corporal 11.3.1917. He became sick in the field 18.10.1917 and was transferred by the 5th Australian Field Ambulance to hospital with Angina. He rejoined his unit 2.2.1918 and took leave to Paris 21.8.1918. He was promoted to Acting Cpl. 23.9.1918. Duncan was detached for duty with the 5th sanitary section and reverted to Lance Cpl 15.3.1919. He marched in to England for return to Australia, (Quota No. 31) 17.4.1919.
