Embarked Fremantle per ‘Argyllshire’ for Devonport 9.11.1916.
Roll Rank Private.
Roll Unit 5th Reinforcement 44th Battalion.
Cleverly was hospitalised at sea 2.1.1917. He disembarked at Devonport with the 5th Reinforcement 44th Battalion 10.1.1917 and marched in to the 11th Training Battalion at Durrington. Cleverley underwent a period of intensive training before proceeding overseas to France 18.9.1917. Cleverly transferred from the Training Battalion to the 44th Battalion 19.9.1917. His Battalion fought on the Somme at Passchendaele where Cleverly was wounded in action with a gunshot wound to his left shoulder, chest and right hand 12.10.1917 (West Australian Newspaper 14.12.1917) Embarked for England per Hospital Ship ‘Princes Elizabeth’ and was admitted to East Leeds War Hospital 21.10.1917.
Embarked for Australia per ‘Durham Castle’ for discharge 10.3.1918. He was transferred to the ‘Orontes’ at Cape town for Australia 19.4.1918.
Returned/Disembarked Fremantle 4.5.1918.
Discharged 3.10.1918.
Final Rank Private 44th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force.
Medical Condition Invalided, with wounds to hand, shoulder and chest
Awards and Medals British War Medal, Victory Medal.
